Stop Buying Watermelons in April! Here’s What’s Fresh in WA Right Now

Introduction

Have you ever bitten into a slice of watermelon lately only to find it mushy and bland? It’s a disappointing experience, but there’s a simple reason for it: Seasonality. As we move deeper into April, the scorching Perth summer is officially behind us, and our favorite summer treats are losing their edge.

But don’t worry! While the watermelon season is fading, a new wave of delicious, crunchy, and sweet fruits is hitting the shelves of Coles, Woolworths, and Spudshed. Here is your guide to what you should be putting in your trolley this month.

1. The End of the Watermelon Era

In Western Australia, watermelons thrive in the heat. By mid-April, the drop in temperature affects their texture, making them “mealy” or mushy. If you aren’t ready to give up on them yet, look for pre-cut halves where you can inspect the flesh—ensure it’s deep red and firm without any visible cracks. However, for the best value for your money, it’s time to move on!

2. It’s Apple & Pear Season (The Crunch is Back!)

If you miss the “crunch” of a good watermelon, turn your attention to the apple aisle. April is the peak harvest time for:

  • Pink Lady & Royal Gala: These are at their absolute freshest right now. They are crisp, sweet, and locally grown in WA.
  • Pears: Look for Packham or Beurre Bosc pears. They are great for snacking or poaching in a bit of red wine for a cozy autumn dessert.

3. The Return of Australian Mandarins

You might see Mandarins popping up everywhere. Don’t be fooled by the name—they aren’t imported from overseas! Most of our citrus is grown right here in Australia (QLD and SA).

  • Imperial Mandarins: These are the first to arrive. They are easy to peel, incredibly sweet, and perfect for school or work lunchboxes.

4. Avocado Lovers, Take Note!

We are currently in the Shepard Avocado season (February to May).

  • Pro Tip: Unlike the common Hass avocado, Shepard avocados do not change color when they are ripe. They stay green! Give them a gentle squeeze near the stem—if it yields slightly, it’s ready to eat. If you prefer the buttery Hass variety, wait until June when the new WA season kicks off.

Conclusion: Shop Local, Eat Seasonal

Shopping seasonally in Perth is the best way to save money and enjoy the best flavors. While it’s sad to say goodbye to summer fruits, the crisp apples and sweet mandarins of autumn are a fair trade-off.
